Interview transcription that keeps every quote
On this page

Interview transcription turns a recording into a text you can quote from with confidence. Upload the file or record in your browser, and voxnoto returns the full interview split by speaker, with timestamps against every line.

Sound familiar?

  • An hour of tape takes hours to type up, and the deadline doesn't move.

  • You remember the quote but not where it is in the recording.

  • A paraphrase that drifts from what the source said costs you their trust and your own.

How voxnoto helps

  1. Upload the interview, record it in your browser, or send the bot to a video call.

  2. Get the transcript split by speaker, with timestamps.

  3. Search for the line you need, check it against the audio, and quote it exactly.

What accurate interview transcription requires

Speaker separation. Two voices in one block of text is not a transcript you can quote from. Each turn belongs to a named person you can rename once and have it applied throughout.

Timestamps. A quote you can't locate in the audio is a quote you can't verify before publication. Timestamps turn checking a line into a ten-second job.

The original audio, kept. The transcript is a reading of the recording, not a replacement for it. When a source disputes a quote, only the audio settles it.

Your words, not a summary. For journalism the transcript is the raw material. A summary is useful for planning the piece, never for quoting.

Which recording method fits your interviews

In person. Open voxnoto in your phone's browser and record. Put the phone between you, an arm's length away, on a soft surface rather than a bare table.

Video calls. Send the bot to Zoom, Teams or Google Meet. It appears in the participant list, so your source can see the call is being recorded.

Phone calls and old tape. Record with whatever you already use and upload the file, audio or video, up to 8 hours.

From transcript to finished piece

  1. Read the transcript once through before pulling anything, the best quote is rarely where you expected it.
  2. Mark the lines you might use, with their timestamps.
  3. Check each quote against the audio before it goes in the draft.
  4. Keep the transcript and the recording together after publication; a challenged quote can surface months later.

Interviews in another language

voxnoto transcribes 99 languages and translates the transcript, so an interview in Portuguese or Polish can be read and quoted by an editor who doesn't speak it.

Quote from the original, not the translation. Use the translated version to find the passage and understand it, then work with a speaker of that language on the wording that appears in print.

Before you record an interview

Ask for permission on the record, at the start, and keep that part of the recording. Rules differ by country and by US state, and for a journalist consent is also a professional norm, not only a legal one.

Recordings are private by default: only the account holder can open them. Nothing is shared unless you share it.

Questions and answers

How do I transcribe an interview?

Upload the recording or record it in your browser. The transcript comes back split by speaker, usually within minutes.

How accurate is it?

Clear audio with one speaker at a time gives the best result. Check any quote against the recording before you publish it.

Is my data safe?

Yes. Uploads and downloads run over encrypted connections, and your files and transcripts stay private in your account: only you can open them. We never sell your content.

Can I transcribe a phone interview?

Yes. Record the call with your usual tool and upload the file.

Which languages does it support?

Speech is recognized in 99 languages, and the spoken language is detected automatically, so there is nothing to set up. A finished transcript can be translated into 22 languages in one click.

Can I edit the transcript?

Yes, including speaker names.

A transcript is a document other people will quote from, so its formatting is not decoration. Consistent speaker labels and honest markers for what couldn't be.
